Welcome to STEP!

At the Dearborn Academy STEP Program, we provide a welcoming, supportive learning environment at a moment when a crisis has erupted in the student's home school. While still reeling from being suspended, students enter our small program. While finding that the school work continues in this different environment, they also can take a deep breath. We encourage them while we assess their students’ strengths, abilities and interpersonal styles. In addition to working on their academics, students become part of a dynamic community designed to promote respect, trust and responsibility. STEP students become active participants in the process and feel responsible for their success here. Students work individually with clinicians and within groups and classes to establish goals for themselves, offer feedback in classroom meetings, contribute ideas to the curriculum, and support each other in working towards a better future. 
 
Since its founding in 2002, STEP has continued to provide short term (45-day) intervention services to our students. Notably, we craft comprehensive assessments with specific components to help the student continue to thrive academically as well as personally after they leave STEP. In addition to the individualized feedback and suggestions we give to families, school districts and collaterals, we help our students discover qualities in themselves that spark their pride and self-esteem. Often students rediscover, or experience for the first time, that they actually enjoy school and learning. They may also learn that they are able to cultivate positive friendships and trusting relationships with staff and peers. Above all, we want them to know what it means to be understood and respected and to experience the hope within our community and within themselves. We are aware of both the privilege and responsibility of working with the young people in STEP and value the opportunity to collaborate with others who are invested in our students’ success.
