Coming to Dearborn

The Dearborn Academy admissions coordinator works closely with referring school systems, parents and the student to ensure as smooth a transition to Dearborn Academy as possible. Looking for a new school can be stressful for students and their parents. Our admissions team works closely with families to be sure that Dearborn will be a good match for their student. We are a great school, but we’re not a perfect fit for everyone, so we work hard to be sure that we can provide just what your student needs to be successful in school. Transitioning Back to your Public School or Another Program

When a student is ready to move on from Dearborn, he or she continues to have our full support. This includes communication throughout the year with the student’s parents and school system to consider the possibility of a move. We provide clear information about the student’s progress and skill levels; ongoing educational, communication and clinical needs as well as program supports needed for the student to be successful. Once a decision is made to look at new schools, our staff will offer as much support as the family wants to explore potential schools and will meet with staff from these schools and provide information about the student

In the past five years, between 30 and 50 percent who are ready to leave us have returned to public school. Many of our students are eager to return to their home district. We're proud of the progress they make and the hard work they do to recover from gaps in their learning. Before they go, we make sure that everything is in place for the new school to address their special learning, counseling and behavioral needs

Other students may continue to need more support as they advance. They may have more complex needs or need additional work or guidance to succeed. Our high school program or other alternative day-school program may be excellent choices. Our staff will explore potential schools with students and parents and discuss options.

At Dearborn we strive to meet ongoing educational and clinical needs, even after students leave our program. Our staff communicates throughout the year with both the parents and the receiving school system, helping ease and support the student's transition.

Ninth Grade Option

For those students who may not be quite ready for the challenges of starting high school, we offer a ninth grade option in the Dearborn Academy Middle School—which is different from the ninth grade at most high schools—including that of Dearborn Academy's own high school. Our middle school ninth grade can help students continue to develop stronger social skills and maturity and build their confidence before entering high school—even as they earn their first year of high school credits. In some instances, newly enrolling students find this a preferred entry point for the Dearborn high school
